Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a Rolex for a while now, and let me tell you, the Cosmograph Daytona Platinum is a real looker. It’s like the holy grail of watches, you know? But those things are ridiculously expensive. So, I decided to try my hand at making a “high imitation” version, just to see if I could pull it off. Don’t judge me, it’s just for kicks.
First off, I did a ton of research. I mean, I practically became an expert on the real deal. I learned that platinum is way denser than gold, which is why these watches are so darn pricey. And they use 950 platinum, which means it’s 95% pure. Fancy stuff, right? Rolex released a bunch of different platinum Daytona models since 2013, all of them made from that precious metal.
I spent days looking at pictures, reading articles, and even watching videos of people reviewing the real thing. I also had to figure out the differences between the real deal and the fakes. I learned that the fakes often feel lighter and the details aren’t as sharp. And the serial numbers on the real ones are engraved deep, not shallow like on the knockoffs.
Then came the hard part – finding the materials. I couldn’t exactly use real platinum, obviously. I mean, who has that kind of cash lying around? So, I had to get creative. I found some stainless steel that looked pretty similar, and I even managed to get my hands on some fake gemstones to mimic those fancy hour markers.
Assemble the parts
The assembly was a whole other beast. I bought a cheap watch movement online – it’s like the engine of the watch – and then I had to figure out how to put it all together. Let me tell you, it was a lot of trial and error. I broke a few parts, cursed a lot, and almost gave up a couple of times. But I kept at it, driven by sheer stubbornness, I guess.

- Start building: I carefully put the watch movement into the stainless steel case. This was tricky, and I messed up a few times.
- Add the face: I found a watch face that looked like the Daytona’s. Putting it on was also tough.
- Set the gems: I carefully placed the fake gemstones where the hour markers should be. This was super fiddly.
- Put on the band: I attached a stainless steel band that looked like the real one.
- Test it out: I wound it up and… it worked! I couldn’t believe it.
After what felt like forever, I finally had something that resembled a Rolex Daytona. It wasn’t perfect, of course. The weight was off, the details weren’t as crisp, and a real watch expert could probably spot it as a fake from a mile away. But you know what? It looked pretty darn good, especially from a distance.
I wore it around for a few days, just to see what it felt like. It was kind of fun, I have to admit. But at the end of the day, it was just a cheap imitation. It didn’t have the same magic as the real thing. It’s like comparing a fast-food burger to a gourmet steak. They both fill you up, but one is clearly superior.
So, yeah, that’s my story of trying to make a high-imitation Rolex. It was a fun experiment, but it also made me appreciate the real deal even more. Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford the real thing. Until then, I’ll stick to my trusty old watch.
