So, I finally did it. I bought an OMEGA Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch, the sapphire crystal version. Yeah, it was a big jump, but I’ve been eyeing Speedmasters for a while now. They just have that classic, timeless look, you know?
First thing I did was a ton of research. I mean, there are so many Speedmasters out there. I watched videos, read articles, the whole nine yards. I needed to figure out which one was right for me.
The size was a big deal. This thing is 42mm, but it actually wears smaller. I compared it to my buddy’s 41mm Rolex Datejust, and the Speedy felt less bulky on my wrist. That was a pleasant surprise.
I really like vintage watches, so I gave it a thought. This one’s got that vintage vibe, but with modern guts. Plus, it holds its value pretty well. I’ve heard some of the older models and limited editions can even go up in price, which is cool.
Then there was the whole sapphire versus Hesalite crystal thing. I went with sapphire because I’m a bit clumsy, and I didn’t want to worry about scratches. The sapphire is tough, so I can wear it without being too paranoid.
This thing is manual wind, I was learning that. I also checked out the Speedmaster Reduced, which is automatic, but the classic Moonwatch just had that “it” factor for me. I love the whole history with it, it was worn on the moon, that’s a big deal for me!
After I decided on the model, I started looking for a good deal. Checked out a few different places, talked to some dealers. Eventually, I found one that had the watch I wanted, and the price was right.
Pulled the trigger, and a few days later, it arrived. Unboxing it was an experience. It comes in this huge presentation box, with a loupe, a strap changing tool, and a bunch of other goodies. It felt really special.
Putting it on for the first time, it was awesome. It felt substantial but not too heavy. The bracelet is comfortable, and the watch just looks amazing. I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks now, and I love it more every day.
Here’s what I’ve noticed after wearing it:
- It’s accurate. I haven’t had to adjust the time much at all.
- The chronograph function is cool. I’ve timed a few things, just for fun.
- It’s versatile. I can wear it with jeans and a t-shirt, or I can dress it up a bit.
- It’s a conversation starter. People notice it, and they always ask about it.
The Bottom Line
Getting this Speedmaster was a great decision. It’s a beautiful watch with a ton of history, and it’s just a joy to wear. If you’re thinking about getting one, I say go for it. Just do your research, find the right model for you, and enjoy the ride.
