Remake Patek Philippe PP Gondolo 7042/100G-010: Where to Buy It

Okay, so today, I’m diving into something a little different—something that’s been on my mind for a while. I’ve always been fascinated by luxury watches, especially the really high-end ones, like Patek Philippe. But, let’s be real, dropping tens of thousands on a watch isn’t in the cards for me right now. So, I thought, why not try to remake one? Not a counterfeit, mind you, but a tribute, something that captures the essence without being a direct copy.

I decided to go with the Patek Philippe Gondolo 7042/100G-010. It’s a beautiful piece, all white gold and diamonds, just stunning. The first thing I did was research. I spent days just looking at pictures, reading about the specs, trying to understand what makes this watch tick, literally and figuratively. I found out that it’s a manually-winding mechanical watch, which is pretty cool. I mean, who doesn’t love a bit of old-school charm?

Next, I had to figure out the materials. Obviously, I wasn’t going to use real white gold or diamonds. I’m not made of money! Instead, I opted for 316L stainless steel. It’s tough, it looks good, and it’s not going to break the bank. For the “diamonds,” I found some really nice cubic zirconia. They sparkle just like the real thing, at least to the untrained eye.

The real challenge was the movement. I’m no watchmaker, so I knew I couldn’t build a mechanical movement from scratch. I searched around and found a decent automatic movement that I could modify. It’s not the same as the Patek’s, but it keeps time well, and that’s what matters.

  • Sourced 316L stainless steel for the case.
  • Found quality cubic zirconia for the diamond effect.
  • Modified an automatic movement for the watch’s heart.

Putting it all together was a whole other beast. I had to get the case made, which involved finding a local metalworker who was willing to take on a weird project. Then, setting the “diamonds” was super fiddly. I definitely pricked my fingers more than a few times. But, slowly but surely, it all came together.

The Result

I’m not going to lie; I’m pretty proud of how it turned out. It’s not a Patek, and it’s never going to fool anyone who knows watches. But, it’s a nice piece in its own right. It’s got the look, the feel, and it tells the time. Plus, I made it, which is pretty satisfying. It’s like, I took this dream of owning a luxury watch and made it a reality, in my own way.

This whole project was a lot of fun, and it taught me a ton about watches and making things in general. If you’re thinking about doing something similar, I say go for it. Just be prepared to get your hands dirty, and don’t expect perfection. It’s all about the journey, right?
