Alright, so I’ve been eyeing those fancy Prada Symbole tote bags for a while now. You know, the ones with the triangle pattern all over them? They’re super chic, but man, the price tag is just, ugh. I heard the original one designed by Mario Prada, and now they’re like, thousands of dollars! Even the cheaper ones are still way out of my budget. I saw online that some people were finding them on sale, but even at a discount, it’s a lot. I also did some search online, the most expensive Prada bag is around $4000-$5000, while some other luxury brand like Gucci could be up to $38000. But that’s not what I want, I just want a Prada one. And I can’t afford that.
So, I thought, “Why not try to make one myself?” I mean, how hard could it be, right? Famous last words, I know. I’m not exactly a crafting expert, but I figured I could give it a shot. Plus, it would be a fun project, and I’d end up with a (hopefully) cool bag at the end.
First, I needed to find some material that looked like the real deal. I spent hours scouring fabric stores and online shops. Finally, I found a thick canvas fabric that had a similar texture to the Prada bags. It wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough, and most importantly, it was affordable.
Next up was the pattern. I couldn’t find an exact replica of the Symbole pattern online, so I decided to create my own simplified version. I grabbed some graph paper and started sketching out triangles. Let me tell you, it took a few tries to get the spacing and size right. It was like trying to solve a really complicated puzzle, but I didn’t have to be perfect. Just wanted to make sure it is similar and not too bad.
- Bought the canvas fabric.
- Designed a simplified triangle pattern.
Once I had my pattern, I cut out the fabric according to the tote bag shape I wanted. This part was a little nerve-wracking because I didn’t want to mess it up. I carefully pinned the pattern to the fabric and started cutting. I ended up with two large rectangular pieces for the front and back of the bag, and a few smaller pieces for the sides and bottom.
Then came the sewing. Oh boy, the sewing. I dusted off my old sewing machine (which I hadn’t used in years) and tried to remember how to thread it. After a few YouTube tutorials, I managed to get it working, and the real fun began.
Sewing everything together felt like a marathon.
I started by sewing the triangle pattern onto the front and back pieces. This was by far the most time-consuming part. I had to go slow and steady to make sure the triangles were evenly spaced and the stitching was straight. My back was aching, my fingers were sore, but I kept going.
After what felt like forever, I finally finished the pattern. Then, I sewed the front and back pieces to the sides and bottom, creating the body of the bag. I even added a little pocket inside for my phone and keys. I tried to make the stitches as neat as possible, but let’s be real, they were far from perfect. There were a few wonky lines and loose threads, but hey, it was handmade!
The last step was to add the handles. I used some sturdy black webbing that I found at the fabric store. I measured and cut two equal lengths, then carefully sewed them onto the top of the bag. This part was actually pretty easy compared to the rest of the project.
And there you have it! My very own, homemade, not-exactly-Prada Symbole tote bag. It’s definitely not a perfect replica. It’s got its flaws, and it’s probably not as durable as the real thing. But you know what? I’m proud of it. I made it with my own two hands, and it didn’t cost me a fortune.
Would I do it again? Maybe. It was a lot of work, but it was also a fun and rewarding experience. If you’re thinking about trying to remake a designer bag, I say go for it! Just be prepared to put in some serious time and effort, and don’t expect it to be easy. And hey, even if it doesn’t turn out perfect, you’ll still have a unique bag that you can say you made yourself. That’s pretty cool, right?
